Huntington Jaycees History In 1944 there was a bunch of young men in Huntington that wanted to start a chapter of Junior Chamber of Commerce. The President of the regular Huntington Chamber of Commerce thought it would be a good thing for Huntington. On October 14, 1944 at the Ballroom of the Lafontaine Hotel, 284 people attended the organizational meeting of the Huntington Junior Chamber of Commerce. Eighty-four men joined that night, making Huntington's chapter extension the largest chapter ever chartered in US Junior Chamber of
Commerce history as of that date. Wayne Messmore was the charter President and is still seen around Huntington occasionally even today in the year 2002. Some of the first projects included the Annual Easter Egg hunt (with 100 dozen real eggs) and the Americanism projects. |
